The stone’s monologue is based upon the descriptions of places captured in the sketches of military painters in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion. They contradictorily combine the artist’s subjective notions and the authenticity of an eyewitness. The artists sketched the particularities of landscape, lighting, and vegetation in order to paint pictures commissioned to them after they have returned to their studios. The witness’s tale as a tool of interpretation functions in two ways: it substitutes the experience of an eyewitness with the trust to the storyteller and mixes the visual with the linguistic.
